Work and Well-being - Information
We offer to educational establishments a package to improve and develop leadership and the management's ability to understand and support the needs of colleagues. This assessment offers the opportunities for educational establishments to monitor progress and improvement over a period of time. Click on the heading below for more information.
Working with Bridget Juniper we offer a scheme that allows you to assess the needs of your staff and their well-being at work. The initial questionnaire and analysis provides the feedback you need to make decisions about the type of support and training your staff will benefit from. A planned programme of training, mentoring and support based on a values approach that is measurable in terms of improvement in your learning communities is developed with you.
Background
Schools have an unenviable reputation for sickness absence which greatly increases staffing, recruitment and training costs, as
well as causing operational disruption and lost productivity.
Central to these problems is the nature of teaching itself.
Issues such as classroom sizes and stretch performance targets have a high impact on overall staff well-being and their desire/ability
to optimize performance.
Being able to assess, scientifically, the effects that work have on teaching staff has been a
challenge historically. Conventionally, organizations assess the situation based on anecdote and inference rather than evidence
which can lead to negative and costly consequences.
Now, a new approach has been developed that addresses this shortfall.
The approach generates robust evidence of staff perceptions across a comprehensive spectrum of issues which can be used by management
to develop a proper, fact-based strategy to optimise and prioritise investment in their teams and facilities. The analysis is also
able to identify the key drivers of business critical outcomes such as absence, intentions to quit and commitment.
What is the approach?
The approach will be in the form of a clinically-based instrument called the Work and Well-Being Assessment for Schools which is
based on proven methodologies used for the past 25 years to measure patient well-being during clinical trials.
The Assessment will be a standardized assessment developed and validated specifically for the teaching community to assess how
overall well-being is impacted by work.
To develop such the Assessment, we are looking for approximately 10 schools to
participate in the research. Involvement is minimal; teaching staff will be invited to complete an online questionnaire which will
take them approximately 10 minutes.
Outputs
All participating schools will receive a report on the well-being of their staff which will benchmark their needs across the wider
study population.
We will identify and rank the most important aspects of teaching as perceived by staff themselves.
The data analysis can contrast and compare sites or sub-groups to identify particular issues or areas of best practice. It can also
determine key drivers of business critical outcomes such as absence and attrition.
Armed with empirical data from the
Assessment, leadership teams can optimize spend by ensuring that subsequent performance programmes match specifically the needs of
their teaching populations. Put another way, this approach helps prevent organizations investing large sums on costly programmes
that are unnecessary or irrelevant to the needs of their workforce.
Owing to its strong measurement properties, the
Assessment detects differences between different groups and is also able to track change over time. Employers can therefore
evaluate the success of interventions such as training and development programmes, against initial baseline data.
How is this different to conventional staff surveys?
There are two key differentiators. Firstly, well-being is measured directly. No other workplace assessments measure
comprehensively how teaching impacts all aspects of well-being and performance.
Secondly, the Assessment for teachers
will be developed on rigorous, scientific principles already used in clinical research. This means that it will have strong
measurement properties which are critical to the overall performance and reliability of the results.
Support after the survey
We will work with you to develop a programme that supports your needs and helps to improve situations that are a halt to progress.
The outcomes are measurable and can be taken over a period of time. This approach should help those schools that are under pressure
to improve academically and have curriculum advisors but who want to develop their school culture in a way that promotes the well-being
of their learning community.
